Meghalaya Diaries- The heaven on Earth|| Double decker bridge, Mawlynnong, Dawki and more

Oct,2019

Meghalaya had always been on our number one checklist. But unfortunately ,due to one or more reasons ,it never made got ticked off our checklist until recently.
Meghalaya is so different and yet so beautiful from the rest of India. For the most part, Meghalaya is unexplored, so you still have places where no western tourists have been.

Let me take you on the most beautiful blogging tour you could have ever had through our pictures of Meghalaya!

Day 1:
We took a flight to Guwahati and decided to take a cab from Guwahati to Shillong. It is a 2.5 hour pleasant drive with the most scenic beauty around.
We had decide to make our base location Shillong and take day trips from there. But what we would recommend is that you opt for a homestay in the beautiful town of Cherrapunji, also known as Sohra. The lush green surroundings of Sohra justifies Meghalaya being called the Scotland of the East. You will get many taxis waiting just outside your hotel on rent for day trips. We however hired a taxi for our entire stay . The drivers here are very helpful and ours ,a teenager named “Kitbot” was extremely friendly.

In the afternoon, we headed over to “The Heritage Club, Tripura Palace” for lunch. The fresh ingredients and the distinctively appetizing aroma made us wonder whether it was the absolutely talented chef at work or the climate which made the food there so flavoursome.

We also did some local sightseeing ,visited the Shillong Church and the Mall road.

Day 2:
The second day was reserved for a trip to Cherrapunji.
The same day we visited the Wakaba Falls, the Ecopark, the Seven Sisters waterfalls and the Mawsmai Cave.
There are many more attractions in Cherrapunji but we had decided to pick and choose only the best amongst them because of our time limitation.

In the evening, on our return back to the hotel we stopped by the ML05 Café for some freshly brewed coffee and snacks.

Day 3:
Just a mile close to the indo-Bangladesh international border is Dawki famous for its river, which is amongst the cleanest river in India.

We headed over to Dawki and enjoyed a peaceful boat ride here.
Not only the cleanest river,Meghalaya also houses Asia’s cleanest village, Mawlynnong Village. So we decided to take a trip and see it for ourselves.
Indeed, it exceeded our expectations. Each and every house of this village has functional toilets and the whole locality is provided with bamboo dustbins. Every waste product and garbage item, even dry leaves go into the dustbin.
The village also provides homestays for interested visitors and has small restaurants serving the most succulent homemade food (fish thali/veg thali/chicken thali).

We thereafter visited the living roots bridge in Mawlynnong. You have to walk some distance on an uneven and descending path to reach the bridge but this one is like a cake walk when compared to the Double decker bridge.

Day 4:
The last day of the trip was reserved to address the elephant in the room and the most difficult leg of the trip- The double decker bridge. We had intentionally scheduled it for the last day because we didn’t want to spoil the rest of the days in Meghalaya in case there is an injury.
So,we got up early in the morning at 6 am and headed for the trek. Our driver also agreed to join us for the trek.
We need to admit that having done the Triund Trek, we found the trek a little higher on the difficulty level due to its dangerous terrain and wobbly living roots bridges that we needed to cross, but the end result was exceptional, something which we could not think in our wildest dream- A picturesque bridge surrounded by soft chirps of the forest birds, wind blowing through the leaves of the huge trees, a waterfall, and a softly flowing river. The dip in the water near the double decker bridge was an absolute delight and thoroughly refreshing.

The memories of the trip stayed with us months after returning from Meghalaya and we still cant stop dreaming and thinking about it whenever we swipe through the pictures on our
phone.

The Benjabi recommendation:

  1. Although tough, but you got to try the double decker bridge
  2. Homestay in Cherrapunji
